Joe was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Kansas City, Mo. He moved to California in 1939 and worked at Lockheed building P-38's during WWII and became a WWII Veteran. Joe then joined the Marine Corps. When war broke out he was shipped to Asia on the USS Missouri and he learned how to be a barber aboard the ship. While returning from his tour in China, his plane lost two engines; in an effort to avoid ditching the plane, Joe and the crew were forced to throw out everything on board the aircraft. They even had to unbolt seats and other parts of the plane and throw them out to reduce the weight of the aircraft. They barely made Johnson atoll in the Pacific.
Upon returning to Los Angeles after the war, Joe went to Barber College in San Francisco and settled in the Salinas Valley in 1948. He owned and operated Joe's Barber Shop on Sanborn Rd. in east Salinas for 57 years.
Joe knew many notable people in Salinas over the years and was always an extremely kind person; he was interested and involved in the community. His presence and service in the community was extremely beneficial to the overall development of Salinas. He was president of the Lions Club and president of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as, an Elks member. Joe was also a member of the Monterey County Sheriff's Posse and managed the posse grounds for years, and kept it going through some very difficult periods.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Zoe of 54 years in 1991. He will be missed by many friends and family who will be eternally grateful for having a relationship with a man with such character and integrity.
