FUNERAL FOR CARL BECK TO BE HELD
Genial, happy, friendly Carl Beck, who for 50 years had made friends in this city, died yesterday morning at a local hospital following a stroke of paralysis a few weeks ago.
Funeral services are to be held Thursday morning. The cortege will leave the Wessendorf Mortuary, thence to Holy Cross church where services will be conducted by Rev. Father P. J. McGrath and interment will be at the Holy Cross cemetery.
Beck was born in Germany in 1855 and came to Santa Cruz 28 years later to work for his brother Theodore, who at that time owned and operated the Vienna brewery at what is now Soquel Avenue and Ocean Street.
He was a lover of music, a talented violinist and was fond of singing and for years was a leader in the Arion Singing Society and enjoyed the social gatherings. He was at one time a member of Holy Cross choir.
He was active in fraternal organizations, including Santa Cruz Stamm, German Order of Red Men, Arion Singing Society, Santa Cruz Aerie of Eagles, U. P. E. C., and the Druids. It was while leading a chorus at the Arion hall he had a stroke.
He was a man devoted to his home and family. Surviving him are the widow, Mrs. Francisca Beck, of 86 South Branciforte avenue; a son, Herbert, of 23 Maple street; a daughter, Clara, of 86 Branciforte avenue, and four sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Langweert and Mrs. Josephine Buss of San Francisco, Mrs. August Peters of 175 Soquel avenue and Mrs. Louisa Ney of 54 Blackburn street.
