A celebration of life for Adam Josiah Berardi will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary, Nevada City.

A burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Grass Valley at 3 p.m.

Beloved son, brother, grandson, best friend, nephew, cousin and so much more, Adam, born to ? and ?, on June 30, 1992, "crashed into Heaven" —as he would put it — with one of his best friends, Micah Lira, by his side on Aug. 15.

Born in Renton, Wash., where he spent his early years, Adam was very gifted in many ways.

He won awards in spelling bees and a letter of recognition from the governor of Washington state.

Adam was adept at hacking past firewalls in his high school's computers, and he could debate his way out of any situation. He was shy but never timid about putting in his two cents worth, for Adam was always right.

He gave more than he took. He was the kid who would take his shirt off his back for anyone, i.e., "I eat, you eat" was the motto.

Always fresh and clean cut before he walked out the door, he aspired to broaden his horizons beyond Grass Valley, to better himself and spread his roots.

With love and care, a keen understanding of anyone's situation, he brought smiles to the table.

A friend, a brother, Adam worked toward perfection, learning how to be a man, a better man than many.

With an open heart and a helping hand, Adam touched many people.

Adam is survived by his parents, ? and ?; stepmother, ?; stepfather, ?; sisters, ?, ?, ?, ?, ? and ?; brothers, ?, ?, ?, ? and ?; grandparents; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

His father and mother loved him very much. Adam was a big brother to all his sisters and brothers.

Friends of two Nevada Union High School graduates planned to mourn the teens Tuesday evening at the site near North San Juan where they died in a single-car wreck.

Adam Josiah Berardi, 19, and Micah Anthony Maneelert-Lira, 19, both of Grass Valley.

The two friends graduated from Nevada Union in June 2010, a relative said.

At about 11:29 p.m. Monday, Berardi was driving a 2000 Audi southbound on Highway 49 south of Tyler Foote Crossing Road, about 10 miles north of Nevada City, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

Berardi was traveling at "excessive" speeds above the posted 55 mph zone, when he failed to negotiate a curve and drifted off the road, according to the report.

Berardi attempted to correct by abruptly veering to the left and then back to the right, before rotating counter-clockwise and careening off the western side of the road, hitting a metal paddle marker and a cedar tree on the passenger side, the CHP reported.

The vehicle then flipped onto its roof and came to rest in the southbound lane, according to the report.

Berardi and Maneelert-Lira both suffered major blunt force trauma and were declared dead at the scene, according to the report.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a contributing factor, but they have not been ruled out, pending a toxicology test, the report said.

The accident is under investigation, the CHP said.

Berardi: ‘Loved his family'
Berardi was remembered as a person who loved life, his family and driving his Audi all over the foothills.

"He liked his Sunday drive," said his younger sister, Linsey Berardi.

He often worked to improve the sound system.

Adam Berardi worked at the construction company of his father, Todd Berardi, where he quickly learned the jobs assigned to him, Linsey Berardi said.

"Anything my dad needed help with, he was there," she added.

"He wanted to make something of himself. He wanted to provide for his family."

Adam Berardi is survived by a large family, including his father, Todd Berardi of Grass Valley; stepmother, Cindy Berardi of Grass Valley; mother Estella Ruiz Figueroa of Washington state; siblings, Jennifer Ballinger, Daniel Ballinger, Julina Berardi, Linsey Berardi, Cande Ruiz and Nephtaly Ruiz; and aunt, Rene Berardi.

Plans for a memorial service have yet to be made, Linsey Berardi said.

Meanwhile, grieving friends and relatives already were gathering Tuesday at the Berardi home in downtown Grass Valley, offering support to each other.

"The Berardi household is open to everybody," Linsey Berardi said.

The family of Micah Maneelert-Lira could not be reached Tuesday.
