Elizabeth was born in 1807 as a daughter of Sarah Alice ( Sargent ) and Daniel Avery. She was born in Oswego County, New York.

Her Mother, Sarah Alice was born in 1772 in Rockingham, New Hampshire.
Her Father, Daniel was born in 1768 in Pepperall, Cheshire, Massachusetts.

Elizabeth married Green Butterfield in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio on September 9, 1826. The Marriage Ceremony was performed by Amaziah Hutchinson, J.P.

The Butterfield family came to Illinois in 1834 and they settled in Precinct # 4 of Schuyler County, Illinois. Elizabeth's parents also made the move and settled in Schuyler County at the same time.

In 1845, the Green Butterfield family then moved to where Galesburg now stands. At the time of their move, Galesburg was almost a trackless prairie.

According to a small abstract obituary for Elizabeth :
Elizabeth Butterfield died on May 22, 1883. She was 74 years 1 month old when she passed away. It stated that she and Green had a family of ten children. Only two of her 10 children, Mrs. George Gloyd and G.G. Butterfield, survived to mourn their Mother's passing.
