After the death of his parents and an infant son, he took his wife and two remaining children, Dewey and Viola, to the Oklahoma Territory. Neither were particularly satisfied so they returned to Lancaster in Sept 1904, after about three months in the West. Instead of going back to the old home pace in the Fork Hill-Flint Ridge Community, they bought a home in Heath Springs and he became associated with the Enterprise and Mercantile Company of Heath Springs. He continued to operate his farm. After the Enterprise closed he opened a grocery store, then in later years, became an employee in the J.A. Williams General Store where he worked for many years, finally retired at the age of 87.
