Martha C. Mitchell, a native of Durham, died March 10, 1980 in Coronado Hospital, Coronado, California, after a lengthy illness. She was born January 30, 1909 to Z.R. and Alma Hughes Chowning. Mrs. Mitchell attended school in Durham where she was an outstanding athlete. Central State University, where she attended college, and was active in physical education and debate, honored her achievements by placing a plaque in Wantland Hall on the campus in 1960. Mrs. . Mitchell studied dance in New York City, and directed her own dance sutdio (sic) in Seminole, Oklahoma, for twenty-five years. After moving to California, she was a physical education teacher in the West Cavina Schools. Mrs. Mitchell retired in 1974. Surviving are her husband, whom she married in 1933, in Oklahoma City; two sons, Robert, a lawyer in Oklahoma City, and Frank, an executive with Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas; three sisters, Fay Wilson of Longview, Texas, Mary Nickell, Alva, Oklahoma, Ferne Minerosa, Oneonta, New York; a brother Ernest Chowning, San Leandro, California; four grandchildren several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Methodist Church and Women's Guild in Coronado. She was also a member of the California Teachers Association. Her body was cremated. Memorial services were held in the Methodist Church and Catholic Church in Coronado. No flowers were requested. Donations were made to the Cancer Society. Cheyenne Star, Cheyenne, Ok.
