Nicholas William Willis, 88, of 200 Oak Street, Tryon, North Carolina, died June 18, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus, North Carolina.

A native of Harbin, China, he was the widower of Jane (Hysham) Willis and son of the late Vasili Leonidovich and Varvara Ignatevna Savostina Podgoretskii Willis. He was stepson of the late William Jasper Willis.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was retired as colonel from the U.S. Army in 1967, where he served in the Office of Special Services among many other positions. Upon retirement, he received three Legions of Merit.

He was a graduate of Texas A&M University and the University of California at Berkeley.

He moved to Tryon from Petersburg, Virginia, in 1967. He taught at Spartanburg High School for 13 years.

Survivors include four sons, John Willis of Chattanooga, TN, Bill Willis of Colorado Springs, CO, Bob Willis of Raleigh, NC, and Jerry Willis of Green Creek, NC; a daughter, Barbara Kimbrell of Hendersonville, NC; and six grandchildren.

Graveside memorial services were held June 21, 1999 in Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, North Carolina.
