Ruth was the daughter of Elizabeth McCotter and James Workman. She was born in Carnlough, Antrim, Ireland and came to the US with her mother and other McCotter relatives, including her grandparents, Dennis and Ann Workman McCotter.

During the voyage to North America, a storm came up off the coast of Nova Scotia and their ship sank. The family was rescued, but lost most of their belongings.

The pages shown at right are from a family bible that Ruby Alexander Combs claims was salvaged from the shipwreck. The first page shows the records of some of Cochrane and Ruth's children while the second page shown records information about Ruth's grandparents, Dennis and Ann McCotter.

Ruth's mother, Elizabeth, remarried to John Conner of Fort Ann.
