Born in Maplewood, Prince Edward Island, Canada, on May 31, 1915, the daughter of John Nantes and Hannah Maria Flood, Gertrude left home at 17 years of age to join the Sisters of Charity. She went on to earn several university degrees, taught school at St. Barnabas, Bellmore, and was a principal in Nova Scotia for many years. She also taught in New York, Massachusetts and Nova Scotia until her retirement in Nova Scotia in 1976. There, she volunteered her time in the Sisters of Charity communities of St. Anne and the Marian and Elizabeth Seton Residences.

Retirement brought her back to the Motherhouse where she was very active, helping with the post office, creating beautiful crafts and volunteering for the benefit of others. A deeply spiritual person, she was an excellent role model and will always be remembered for her kind and caring ways.

Sister passed away at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Sunday, October 24, 2010, aged 95.

Visitation and funeral Mass were held in the Chapel of Caritas Residence, Mount St. Vincent, followed by interment at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.
