Paul Edward Mentzer, Sr. born in State Line, Pa. was the son of Rev. Frank Gossert and Mary Alice Wagaman Mentzer.

He was the husband for 66 years to the late Vivian Irene Lynn Mentzer who died Feb. 15, 2011.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and parachuted with the 82nd Airborne into Sicily and Holland during World War II. Upon his discharge, he returned to Hagerstown, MD and worked for the Western Maryland Railway as a brakeman for a few years. In 1954 Paul joined the Hagerstown Police Department, where he later retired as a lieutenant of detectives in 1983.

He is survived by one son, Paul E. Mentzer, Jr; two daughters, Danna L. Mentzer and Bonny A. McAlister, all of Hagerstown.

He is also survived by four sisters, Evelyn L. Hammond, Jean L. Cook and Shirley A. Ryland, all of Hagerstown, and Dolores J. McAllister of Falling Waters, WV.

In addition to his wife and parents, Paul was preceded in death by three sisters, E. Alice Elliott, Mary F. Garner and Leila R. Thomas; and three brothers, Daniel A. Mentzer, David F. Mentzer and Lester H. Mentzer.
