Bessie Hundley Barker, 101, of 300 King's Way Road, Martinsville, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, at King's Grant Health Care.

She was born in Henry County on March 20, 1906, to Joseph Taylor Hundley and Mary Etta Hopkins Hundley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert F. Barker Sr.; her son, Gilbert F. Barker Jr.; four sisters, Rosa H. Garrett, Mary H. Warren, Sallie L. Hundley and Lena Warren; and five brothers, T. Marshall Hundley, G. Andrew Hundley, R.D. Hundley, Reed L. Hundley and J. Saunders Hundley.

She graduated from Axton High School in 1922 and attended Perry Business School and Steed College of Commerce. She received an award of completion for attending the nurse's aid course at Patrick Henry Community College.

She was manager of White Hall Motel in Roanoke, worked at Moorefield Cleaners and managed the housekeeping department at Dutch Inn for several years. Ten years before her retirement, she worked in the Learning Lab at PHCC.

She had been a member of McCabe Baptist Church since 1940, taught Sunday school for more than 60 years and was active in WMU. She was a member of the Martinsville Business and Professional Women's Club and was awarded the Woman of the Year for Community Services for 1987-1988. She was also a member of Women's Christian Temperance Union for 50 years and a member of AARP since 1972.

Surviving are her daughter, Margaret Barker Harper of Charlottesville; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McCabe Memorial Baptist Church. The Rev. Lewis Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

The funeral for Bessie Hundley Barker, 101, of Martinsville, who died Nov. 23, 2007, was held Tuesday at McCabe Memorial Baptist Church. The Rev. Lewis Harris officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Moyer Merriman,
L.D. Oakes, Marvin Sawyers, Joey Phillips, David Joyce, Mark Sparks and Edd Shires.

Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
