Ella Schmidt, age 98, Mandan, died May 2, 2011 at the Medcenter One Care Center off Collins in Mandan.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM on Thursday, May 5 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Reverend Lee Herberg officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, south of Mandan.
Ella was born on the family farm south of Mandan on September 16, 1912, the daughter of Edwin and Anna (Janecek) Popelka. Raised and educated in the area, she was a member of the Sokol tumbling team that performed in Chicago. On February 5, 1940 Ella married Floyd Schmidt and they continued the farming operation on the homestead where she grew up. Together they had five children.
Ella was a very strong, loving, kind, and understanding woman. She was never judgmental and always accepting. She was an important part of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's lives and enjoyed watching them participate in extracurricular activities. Active with RSVP for thirty years, Ella also volunteered her time with errands and had numerous tele-friends. She was volunteer of the year multiple times and made several friends through her volunteer work.
An avid Minnesota Twins fan, she enjoyed watching the games on TV and if she wasn't around a TV, you could always find her listening to the game on the radio. Ella was immensely proud when the Twins won a world series. You would think she played the game herself and during the baseball season she always wore her Twins jacket or sweatshirt.
Ella kept herself busy with various arts and crafts as well as listening to Daniel O'Donnell. On her 90th birthday, she was able to go to one of his concerts and met him in person.
She is survived by two daughters, Edna (Gene) Kottsick and Delores (Barney) Ternes; two sons, Richard Schmidt (Cindy Peterson) and Gary (Gerry) Schmidt; daughter-in-law, Cherllyn Schmidt; sister-in-law, Ann Popelka; ten grandchildren, Sherri (Brett) Peiler, Bud (Julie) Kottsick, Mark (Shannan) Kottsick, Tammy (George) Runyan, Marcy (Dean) Blotsky, Jessica Schmidt, Debbie (Rick) Vacuna, Greg (Tracy) Ressler, Tasha Schmidt, and Brandy Pabst; and fifteen great-grandchildren, Chelsie, Evan and Carly, Dakota and Darrick, Courtney and Tristan, Whitney and Hayden, Makenzie and Garrett, Sydnee, Abbie, and Devon and Kylie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd, who died on April 17, 1980; son, Donald; grandson, Dean; three brothers, John, Ed, and Anton; and one sister, Lydia.
