Enlisted 14 Aug 1861 (credited to Dorset, VT), mustered as 1st Sgt. in Co. E 5th Vermont Infantry 16 Sep 1861, commissioned 2nd Lt. in Co. F 21 Jun 1862, transfered to Co. C 9 Jul 1862, promoted to 1st Lt. Co. B 22 Nov 1862, wounded at Fredericksburg 13 Dec 1862, dischraged for wounds 31 Mar 1863, commissioned 1st Lt. in Veteran Reserve Corps 21 Oct 1863, Bvt. Maj. 13 May 1865, promoted to Capt. 21 Jun 1865, mustered out 30 Jun 1866.

Continued his military service after the war serving in the 2nd and 19th Unites States Infantry. He retired 28 Jun 1878.
