Edgar S. Perry

Edgar S. Perry was born about 1833 in, most likely, Benson, Rutland, VT. He was the son of Benjamin West Perry and Lucy Martindale. He was the gr(eat)grandson of Moses Perry of Sherborn, Middlesex, MA who answered the Lexington Alarm in the Revolutionary War. Edgar was a dairy farmer. He served in Co. A, 2d Reg. NY Mounted Rifles. The War Dept. renamed his unit as Co. A, 7th Reg. NY Cavalry (Black Horse). He was a bugler. The regiment was Organized at Troy, NY (7 Cos.), and mustered in Nov. 6, 1861. It left NY State for Wash., D.C. Nov. 23, 1861, and had duty there till March, 1862. It was mustered out March 31, 1862, and honorably discharged from service. According to Edgar's Civil War file, Edgar and Amelia (Rice) were married on 24 Jan 1865 in Granville, Washington, NY at the home of Orison (sic) and Eliza Bishop. In the file was a letter from Mrs. Hulda D. Martindale of W. Ft. Ann, Washington, NY stating that she was acquainted with Edgar S. Perry and Amelia Rice from their youth up. Hulda Martindale's maiden name was Bishop and she was the wife of Benejah B. Martindale, Jr. a nephew of Lucy Martindale and therefore Edgar Perry's cousin. Orson and Eliza Bishop appeared in the 1870 census for Fort Ann. Based on their ages it seems Orson was, most likely, Hulda's brother. The 1870 census for Castleton, Rutland, VT showed Edgar S. Perry, age 37, Farm Laborer, born in VT: Amelia, 38, born in VT; Hattie, 4 born in VT; Benjamin, 1, born in VT. He appeared in the 1880 census for Benson, Rutland, VT but in 1900 Amelia was shown as a widow and living with her son Edgar, Jr. in Castleton.
