Maude E. Frey, 88, of 8 S. Barbara St., Mount Joy, died Sunday evening at St. Joseph Hospital after a brief illness. She was the widow of Ross J. Frey, who died in 1984, and William Ellis, who died in 1949. A Mount Joy resident most of her life, Mrs. Frey retired in 1963 from the Mount Joy plant of AMP Inc. After retiring, she took up bowling at the Lincoln Lanes in Mount Joy, with an average of 76. Several years later, at the age of 83, her average was 115, and her highest game had been 209, according to a 1985 newspaper article. At the time, she bowled on the Joylanders' Hot Fudge team at Mount Joy's Clearview Lanes. "Bowling is relaxing for me," she said. "I can feel bad in the morning and come in here to bowl and then I feel great." She was a member of Chiques United Methodist Church of Mount Joy and the Mount Joy Leisure Club. Born in Royalton, Dauphin County, she was the daughter of the late Winfield and Sarah Seitz Espenshade. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lou Sheaffer, Wilmington, Del.; two stepdaughters, Reba, wife of Robert E. Gross, Millersville, and Regina, wife of James Boose, New Holland; a stepson, Ross J. Jr., Willow Street; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Ruth Hall and Alice Troutman, both of Mount Joy, and Viola Kauffman, Bainbridge.
