Surviving him at the time of his death were two sons and three daughters; four brothers, Walter Gillespie, Willis Gillespie, Buford Gillespie, and Hoyt Gillespie; three sisters, Louise Gillespie (later Albertson), Mrs. Frank (Pearly) Trammell, and Mrs. Bill (Mary) McKee; and his grandmother, Mrs. Emma Gassaway.
His service was held at the Church of God on June 18, 1952. (See note about interment below)

(Obit states burial in West View, but he is buried in the very upper corner of what was then known as Gantt Memorial Park, a new cemetery just opened for burials that year. This cemetery is now known as Liberty Memorial Gardens - see photo and notes).
