Son of Manse & Susie Crowder Gillespie; husband of Lula Galloway Gillespie.

His obituary stated he was a retired farmer and had spent most of his life near Liberty, but had lived near Midway for the past five years.

Survived by his wife; four sons, Buford Gillespie of Liberty, Walter a Gillespie of Piedmont, Willis "Bud" Gillespie of Liberty, and Hoyt "Jack" Gillespie of the Home; three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Pearly) Trammell of Cateechee, Mrs. Frank (Louise) Albertson of Easley, and Mrs. Willie (Mary) McKee of Greenville; 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Sam Gillespie and Frank Gillespie, both of Liberty; and two sisters, Mrs. Pink (Lydia) Dodgens of Central and Mrs. John Rhodes of Greenville.
