DEATH SUMMONS JOSEPH KEEPERS
Two weeks lacking one day following the death of his wife, the venerable Joseph Keepers passed away at his home No. 124 South Tenth Street, Wednesday at 12;20 o'clock. The funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church, of which the deceased had been an official for many years, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev W. E. Bridge and the interment will be held in the City Cemetery beside the grave of his wife.
"Uncle Joe" Keepers, as he was affectionately known to all, had been in poor health for some time and the strain following the recent death of his wife, is believed to have further weakened his condition. He was bedfast for about three weeks.
Mr. Keepers was born in Pennsylvania Sept 17, 1831. While a youth, his parents moved to Ohio, settling in the eastern part of Guernsey Co, where he grew to young manhood. He married in 1851 Sarah Kimball and to this union was born eight children as follows, Lissie, George, twin children, Joseph, Olive and Celia, all Deceased, and Mrs. Minnie Darrow. In addition to one daughter living, Mr. Keepers is survived by 2 grandchildren, George Keepers of Gallup NM and Miss Josephine Darrow of Granville and one great grandchild Joseph St. Clair Keepers.
Mr. Keepers moved to Cambridge about 10 years ago and during 30 years of that resided in the house in which he died. He united with the First Baptist Church in 1876 transferring his membership from the Clear Fork Baptist Church. He was elected a deacon in the First Baptist Church in 1882. He was also a member of the Masonic order.
During recent revival meetings in the church he took an active part until prevented by sickness and his voice was often heard in earnest prayer. The deceased was a consistent Christian, devoted to his family and during the illness of his wife, before he became bedfast, was her constant companion, anticipating her every wish and doing all that he possibly could to relieve her suffering. During his long journey through life he made many friends who will sincerely regret to learn of his death.
