Felix Oliphant and two sons, Larkin and John, came to the Osage Ceded Lands in southeastern Kansas in 1865 from Warensburg, MO. Felix staked a claim four miles east of what is now Mt Zion Church, then called the Big Hill Community.

They constructed a log house for the family, went back to Missouri, and brought the family to Kansas in the summer of 1866. Felix had five or six daughters besides the two sons mentioned, and other children were born here.

One thing that Felix was very proud of was his team of horses. Few people owned horses in that time, most settlers had a covered wagon drawn by a team of oxen.
