Nanette K. Brown, 73, of Valparaiso, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Porter Hospital. She was born November 23, 1934 in Valparaiso the daughter of Elden and Edna (Spratley) Kuehl, graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1952 and Lutheran Nursing College in Fort Wayne in 1955. She had served as a Registered Nurse for Porter Memorial Hospital for 20 years; 16 years in the Emergency Room, then four years as head of the Admitting Department. She returned to school and acquired her B.S. in nursing from St. Francis College in 1985 while simultaneously working as a clinic nurse at Midwest Steel. Nan then taught nursing classes at Ivy Tech College in Valparaiso for 10 years, retiring in 1996. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on their Altar Guild, Elderjoy Board, Food Pantry and volunteered her nursing services at church on Sundays. She took great pride in having accomplished her Master Gardener certificate from the Purdue Extension in 2006 in part for extensive prairie restoration at her home.
On May 14, 1955 in Angola, IN she married Charles M. Brown who preceded her in death in 2001.
Survivors include their two children: Cynthia (Andrew) Elliott of Midland, MI and Timothy (Lori) Brown of Cedar Lake; her mother, Lois Kuehl of Valparaiso; four grandchildren: Benjamin and Elaine Elliott, Bradley and Suzanne Brown; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nan was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Eldonna Gill in 2005. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 5, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1700 N. Monticello Park Drive with Rev. Donald Williams officiating.
Burial to follow at Angelcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00-5:00 PM and Monday 1:00–2:00 PM DIRECTLY at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
