Spouse: Gertrude Tacken (married January 30, 1845, in Bleiwaesche)
Their Children: Julia, Bernard or Bernhard (this child's name was found on ship's list, Aug 2011, by Junice (Milbocker) McKee), Anthony, Elizabeth
It was Louis' desire to become a Catholic priest. However, because he contracted consumption (tuberculosis), his plan was thwarted. His physician recommended he live among pine trees and clean air.
Louis, Gertrude, who was pregnant, and children, Julia, Bernard and Anthony, left the port of Bremen, Germany, and emigrated to Mohawk Hills, Lewis County, New York in 1857, arriving on April 23, 1857, aboard the ship, "Reinhard". 4th child, Elizabeth "Libby", was born October 29th of that same year.
What happened to Bernard is unknown, but our search continues. The "Family Search" website shows his Catholic christening took place on May 26, 1849, in Bleiwaesche, Westfalen, Prussia. Sometime, between 1857 and 1864, he disappears. Assuming he was born in 1849, the year of his christening, he would have been 15 when the family left New York for Michigan. Did he return to Prussia, remain in New York, or die in New York, before the family came to Michigan? It's also possible that he came to Michigan, but his name doesn't appear on the 1870 US Federal Census.
In 1864, the family moved to Brown City, Michigan, where Louis purchased 80 acres and built a home (see photo) at 4844 Blacks Corners Road. His occupations were mason, shingle maker and farmer. The 1870 U.S. Federal Census lists his occupation as "farmer", his Brown City real estate valued at $900, and personal property at $275. He and his family were members of St Mary's Catholic Church, Burnside, Michigan.
The Michigan Health Dept Death Records lists his age at "60 years, 10 months", and cause of death, "old age". No record has been found, thus far, of his exact date of birth but, because January 30, 1819, is exactly 60 years and 10 months before his date of death, we've used it.
Anyone with more info, especially on Bernard/Bernhard, or possessing a portrait/exact date of birth/parents' and siblings' of Louis, please click on my name and e-mail me. Thank you. Mary Abbey
