Gertrude is the daughter of Joannes Matthaeus and Elizabeth (Schulte) Tacken, and was born in Bleiwaesche, Westphalia, Prussia.

Siblings: Not known at this time (still researching)

Spouse: Johann Ludwig, aka Louis, Kaufman (married January 30, 1845, in Bleiwaesche)

Their Children: Julia, Bernard (or Bernhard), Anthony, Elizabeth

According to her granddaughter, Clara (Milbocker) Roach, Gertrude spoke English.

She was almost 34 when she married Louis, so her children were born late in life, as well. With children, Julia, Bernard and Anthony, the couple sailed to America, from the port of Bremen, Germany, on the ship, "Reinhard", in 1857, and arrived in New York April 23, 1857. On the voyage, Gertrude was pregnant with Elizabeth, who was born October 29, 1857, after the family settled in Mohawk Hill, New York.

Sometime between 1857 and 1864, son, Bernard/Bernhard, may have died, because the only place his name was found, thus far, is on the ship's passenger list.

In 1864, the family moved to Brown City, Michigan, where Ludwig purchased 80 acres and built a large brick home, which is still owned by the Kaufman family.

The couple is listed in the 1876-1887 "Lapeer County Parish Census", under North Branch (Burnside), Michigan, as "Ludwig & Gertrude Kaufman", so, apparently, he was still going by his German, Ludwig, name in America. What happened to his "Johann" name is unknown. Both they and their children were members of St Mary's Catholic Church, Burnside.

Anyone with info on what happened to Bernard/Bernhard, please click on my name and e-mail me. Thank you. Mary Abbey
