Nathaniel married Lillis Humphrey on 6 December 1770. They had 8 children. Josiah, Nathaniel, Bicknell, Ebenezer, Simon, Sarah, Asa and James.

American War of Independence

"Nathaniel Smith, Sergt.; Was a Minute Man, and afterwards a recruiting officer, in the early days of the war; was sergeant in Cap't Thomas Allin's Col, Auguse 1775; appeared on the alarm at Bristol, April 1, 1776. On January 20 1777; Col. Nathaniel Martin ordered a guard to be kept night and day at his fathers house (James Smith) on Rumstick. He was also a member of Capt. Samuel Bosworth's artillery Co.,; was on of the guard appointed by Col.Nathan Miller June 5, 1777, so serve on Rumstick for fifteen days; served on the militia guard of Barrington, from April 5, to May 20, 1778; was appointed sergeant in Col.
