Sheakleyville Couple Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Today

Fifty years ago today, Elmer E. Minnis and Rebecca M. Roberts were married - May 10, 1983 by the Rev. James Foster, and today they had the pleasure of celebrating the anniversary surrounded by members of their family at a 8 o'clock dinner this evening at their home in Sheakleyville.
This afternoon from 2 to 4 o'clock was devoted to friends and neighbors who called to extend their felicitations to a couple whose lives were largely spent in and around the community in which they now live. Except for a few short intervals, most of their 70-odd years have been spent in Salem, Sandy Creek or Sheakleyville.

Mrs. Minnis, born in Salem, was one of six children of Hon. T. Benton Roberts and Margaret Baker Roberts, and except for Jennie, wife of A.T. Minnis, the remainder are living today. They are Emma, wife of George Williams, of Atlantic; John Roberts, of Greenville, Crandall D. Roberts of Salem and Ora wife of John Hurst, of Denver, Colo. Mrs. Minnis is one of very few people to celebrate a golden wedding who will have the pleasure of her mother's presence at the event. Mrs. Margaret Roberts, now 95, will be among the dinner guests tonight if her health permits.

Mr. Minnis came from a larger family, and fewer are now living. Of a family of seven boys and four girls children of Asher and Elizabeth Newbold Minnis, four remain, the others being Thornton of Sandy Creek, T.B. Minnis of Adamsville and H.V. Minnis of Sheakleyville.
The couple who are celebrating today have four children, Guy Minnis of Sandy Creek Township, Roy Minnis of Sandy Lake,Mildred, wife of Arthur Kuhn of Hadley and, Paul Minnis of Greenville. There are 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Minnis began housekeeping in Salem township, where they built their first house, selling it about three years after to emigrate to Southern Kansas. There they took up two claims of 160 acres each, but hot winds and rattle-snakes helped to discourage their ambition to grow up with the Kansas country. At that time southern Kansas was bordered by Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Upon returning to Mercer county two years later, Mr. and Mrs. Minnis again took up a residence on a farm, but for many years thereafter, Mr. Minnis was associated with the monument firm of P.J. Halpin, later Halpin and Titzel, Halpin & Reed, still later owned by N.A. Wellman, and finally Orris Shelley.

For the past ten years Mr. Minnis has been employed in the circulation department of the Record-Argus, in charge of the suburban
field.
In addition to his business activities, Mr. Minnis is Burgess of Sheakleyville, one of the oldest towns in Western Pennsylvania. Both Mr. and Mrs. Minnis are member of the First Baptist church of Greenville and have a wide acquaintance here. They lived for some time on South High street.
At 4 o'clock dinner tonight at the Minnis home in Sheakleyville will be attended by practically all of their nearest relatives, including children and grandchildren, brothers and sister of the couple.
