Former Sutton resident Howard Richard Griess, 68, of the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996, at Veterans Medical Center in Grand Island.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday at Sutton Cemetery with the Rev. Rod Dunkerson officiating. Military rites will be provided by Sutton American Legion Post No. 61. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Griess was born Feb. 22, 1928, to Hugo and Molly (Lissman) Griess in Lincoln. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, Korean War and two tours during the Vietnam War. He retired as master chief in 1971. He worked for International Harvester in California. He later worked for the Bendix Corp. and E-Systems/MSO in Oxnard, Calif., Ascension Islands, Saudi, Arabia and Egypt. He retired in the early 1990s and moved to Sutton. In 1995 he moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home.
Survivors are one daughter, Nancy Griess of Elkhorn; two sons, Richard of Sacramento, Calif., and Daniel of Ventura, Calif.; four sisters, Gerre Plettner of Sutton, Virginia Tribble and Marilyn Potter, both of Lincoln, and Norma Shumate of Grants Pass, Ore.; one brother, Ron of Emerald; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one brother and his ex-wife Samlee Griess Reeves.
