WHITTIER - Services were held Sunday for a Whittier grandmother who was killed last week by an alleged drunken driver.

Deisi Alaez, 67, was a deeply spiritual, stylish and hard-working woman who immigrated to the United States in 1963 at age 19, her daughter, Deisi Vazquez, said.

"She had little, but she gave of what she didn't have," her daughter said.

Alaez was a devoted student of Jesus Christ, Vazquez said, though she did not espouse any specific Catholic or Protestant denomination.

"She was the most spiritual person you'll ever meet," the daughter said. "She had an unbelievable faith in God."

She's survived by her daughters, Vazquez, 44, and Nancy Amador, 35, as well as her son, Nelson Amador Jr., 37, and five grandchildren, ages 1 to 22.

"She was a great mom," Vazquez said, "and the best grandma ever."

Alaez was on her way home from a spiritual summit about 10 p.m. last Monday when the fatal crash occurred at Lambert Road and Gunn Avenue, Vazquez said.

Vazquez said her mother immigrated to the United Stated from Cuba in 1963 and married her first husband a year later.

As a young woman, she worked at her mother's bridal shop, "Deisi Moda," in Los Angeles while she started a Cuban cultural club and made lifelong friends, her daughter said.

She served as the manager of a bank in Los Angeles, then moved to Whittier in the mid-1970s. For the past 15 years, she was a social worker at the Department of Public Social Services in Norwalk.

Alaez was married and divorced twice, though she remained close to both her ex-husbands, Vazquez said.

After ending her 17-year marriage with her first husband, Nelson Amador, with whom she had her three children, she remarried Ricardo Alaez in 1990, the daughter said. Her divorce from Alaez became final the day she died, she added.

Despite the divorces, the family remained tight, Vazquez said. "We all celebrated our holidays together."

Vazquez said her mother was known for her colorful style.

"She loved clothes and accessories," she said.

Norma Castaneda, 42, who worked with Alaez for the past 11 years at the social services office in Norwalk, said she was "like a mom to everybody here."

"Deisi would always find the words to comfort anybody," she said. "She was an amazing lady."

Castaneda recalled how her friend decorated her desk with angel figurines and inspired those around her.

"If she knows you, you will be her friend for life, because that's the way she was," the friend said. "To me, it was an honor to know this lady."

Brandon Dominguez, 20, of Whittier, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Whittier Superior Court to charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and drunken driving in connection with the crash, court officials said. He's being held in lieu of $1 million bail as he awaits trial.

A Mass for Alaez will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church, 11506 Walnut St. in Whittier, with burial immediately following at noon at Rose Hills Memorial Park and Cemetery.
