John's mother, Mary Chase died when he was 3 years old. His father was Capt. Henry Gibbs, Jr. John was a mariner (as was his father) and was the first tugboat captain on the Providence River. The first steam towboat on Narragansett Bay was named after him, "J.C. Gibbs". He and Abigail Chace were married January 27, 1836 in Taunton, MA. They had 3 sons: Henry Francis (born 21 years before Nelson), Nelson Hall Gibbs (our ancestor) and Richard B. (also a mariner & captain).
John died of pneumonia at his home on 24 Arnold Street, Providence, RI. His wife later died there as well. John built this home, pictured on right and it is currently registered with the RI preservation Society.
