Richard (the younger) worked as an assistant jeweler with his father in Patchogue in 1915. He and his parents lived on Jennings Avenue.
Richard joined the military on 15 May 1917, enlisting in Mineola, NY. He died in a flying accident while attending the School of Aerial Gunnery R.A.F., four miles away from Hicks Field, in Fort Worth, Texas, where he was a Cadet.
Obituary - Patchogue, February 20 - The funeral of R. Morgan Porter, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Porter, of this place, a cadet in the Canadian Royal Flying Corps, who was killed in an aeroplane accident near Hicks Field, Fort Worth, Texas, Wednesday, will be held from the home of his parents on Jennings Avenue, tonight at 7:30. the Rev. Louis H. Johnston, of the local Congregational Church, in charge. The remains arrived yesterday morning at 8 o'clock. It is expected he will be given a military burial. Both funeral and the interment, Thursday, in Cedar Grove Cemetery, will be private.
