Dr. Ander Morgan "Boots" Mumford, 81, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997 at his home in Greenville.

The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Hugh Burlington. Entombment will be in Pinewood Mausoleum.

Dr. Mumford was born on January 13, 1916 in Ayden to Mr. and Mrs. Heber Gardner Mumford. He grew up in Ayden graduating from Ayden High School in 1932 as class historian. He attended Wake Forest College from 1933 until 1939 and graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry and Medicine. He obtained his medical degree in 1941 from Jefferson Memorial College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and interned with Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia.

On December 21, 1941, Dr. Mumford married Bedie Price and from 1942 until 1946 he served in the United States Army attaining the rank of captain. He entered general medical practice in 1946 in Winterville, North Carolina, served as President of the Pitt County Medical Society in 1949 and 1958, and was chief of Obstetrics from 1953 until 1955.

From 1959 until 1962 Dr. Mumford specialized in Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat) at Duke Medical Center. He returned to Greenville in 1962 and started a new practice, which became Pitt Ear, Nose and Throat. He was an active member of the American Medical Association and the Pitt County Medical Society. He served as Chief of Staff for Pitt County Memorial Hospital from 1965 until 1966. He retired from his full-time practice in 1982.

Dr. Mumford was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was also a former member of the Greenville Kiwanis Club.
