"Mr. Cheney was born in West Topsham on Aug. 4, 1867, the son of Benjamin and Rosamond[Roseanna] Cheney, and he attended the old Barre academy. After leaving school he learned the stone cutters' trade at E. L. Smith & Co.'s plant [error per his son, he went to NH to learn the granite trade, his grdau has copy of post card he sent from there to his sister, Anna] and later went into business for himself.
"On Dec. 27, 1892, he was married to Theresa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Perry of Barre, and she, with six children, survives. The children are: Bunal, aged 20, a student at the London(sic) school of argriculture [now Lyndon Institute, Lyndon Ctr, Vt]; William Perry Cheney, aged 18, a graduate of Spaulding high school last June; Irma, aged 10; Esther, aged six; and twin daughters, aged four years.

OCCUPATION:
"Owner and operator of a granite works in Barre, first in partnership with Corliss (Corliss and Cheney) but discovered Corliss' hand in the till, so he sold out and bought another--owned Cheney Granite Works and Barre Monumental Works, in what order, I forget. I suppose Rock of Ages acquired all those small industries.
"He developed 'silicosis of the lungs' from the granite dust, was told he would not survive 6 weeks if he went back to the granite industry, so he sold out about 1904 and retired to a farm in Berlin.
"He found he could not make a living farming, so went to Ohio and one to the Carolinas where he again worked in the granite business.
"He became bed-ridden and my father [his son] ran the farm until after his father died in 1914 and Grandma remarried in 1915 as she had 4 small daughters, two of whom died in 2004, ages 95 & 100." [per.grdau.Ruth]
