17th Indiana Infantry
Enlisted 10/27/1864
Mustered out 8/8/1865

Byrum Burge, age 26, married, a native of Indiana and a resident of Union Township, Porter Co., and registered for the draft on July 11, 1863. He enrolled in Michigan City on October 27, 1864, as a private in Company D of the 17th Indiana Infantry. He mustered out Aug. 8, 1865 at Macon, Georgia. Byrum may be the son of Jeremiah Burge, according to a biographical sketch of William Henry Harrison Burge in the Valparaiso Vidette-Messenger of Mon., Sept. 24, 1934. The sketch may shed some light on why Byrum's place of birth varies. In the sketch, William says he is one of four children of Jeremiah and Sally Burge, and he was born six days after the election of William Henry Harrison as president. He mentions his uncle, James, a bank official in Crown Point; "Brother Byrum Burge"; and tells how his father owned the property once known as the Hoosier Nest, which had been a hotel:--- after selling the Hoosier Nest, which was in the year 1845, father moved to Chatauqua County, New York, where we remained until 1851, when we returned to Indiana and bought a farm near Hickory Point on the Lake-Porter county line. There we lived for four years, when we again went to New York state, where I remained until 1862 when I got married---. Byrum Burge maintained a general store at Wheeler Station. His third wife, Christann, died on the 4th of July, 1902. In 1903, Byrum then married Harriett, widow of Edward C. Gero, another Civil War veteran buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. In the years before he died, he received a $270 annual pension from the Veterans Administration, paid quarterly. The Times of Thurs., Nov. 7, 1916, states: "Byron Burge is in a very critical condition at this time, no hopes being entertained for his recovery. His children were all home to see him last week. Henry and Harry Burge came from a distance." The Times of Tues., Dec. 12, 1916, states: "B. Burge is gradually growing weaker every day." Burge died Jan. 11, 1917, in Merrillville at age 80. He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Hammond, near his last wife, Harriett, who had died in 1921; and her first husband, Edward C. Gero, who died in 1897.

Research provided by Linda Herrick Swisher, public information coordinator, Hammond Public Library.

Byrum was married in 1855 to Rachel Frame and had at least 5 children with her between the years of 1855 and 1866. Not sure what happened to Rachel.
