Former Sonora resident Irene Jimenez Perez died Sunday, July 31, 2011, at her home in San Angelo, Texas. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Sonora Cemetery.

Irene was born Jan. 28, 1938, in San Jose de Aura, Coahuila, Mexico, to Oscar A. and Jovita Jimenez. Irene never met a stranger, she brought joy, happiness and laughter to friends and family. She started her education at the tender age of four because she wanted to be by her older sister, Gloria Estelle De Luna's side, who preceded her in death. She excelled in school, reciting lenghthy poetic verses by memory, bringing full audiences to tears. Irene took home numerous oratory awards. Her father, Oscar, who preceded her in death, provided the necessary funds to allow Irene to pursue a higher education. Making this her life's mission, she provided and encouraged the importance of education for her four daughters, Jackie Hinojos (Phil) of San Angelo, Debbie Barraza(Robin) of Ackerly, Nereida Nunez(Joel) of San Angelo and Patsy Mixon (Clint) of Greenville, Miss.

She is also survived by her brother, Joe Jimenez of San Angelo; and sisters Etelvina Luna (Ignacio) of San Angelo, Rosalba Chavez(Victoriano) of Dallas and Irma Samaniego(Jimmy) of Jal, N.M. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Irene adored and loved her five grandchildren, Dr. Steven Daniel Barraza of Houston, Marcelo Roberto Barraza of San Angelo, Hannah Jade Mixon and Kelsi Brooke Mixon of Greenville, Miss., and Natalie Victoria Nunez of San Angelo. Her life was made complete by having met her two beautiful great-granddaughters, Celeste Analei and Kinsley Elaine Barraza, who bore a striking resemblance to their Neni.
