Ricky Wayne Byers, 52, of Kill Devil Hills and formerly of Pullman, passed away Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, in Kill Devil Hills. Rick was born in Lewiston on Dec. 7, 1957.
He is survived by his beloved children, John Dustin Patterson of Seattle, Tyler Wayne Byers of Greensboro, N.C., and Brittany Leigh Byers of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; Rick was cherished by his sisters, Cheryl Byers-Schauble and Debbie Wilmoth, both of Kennewick, and Laurie Byers-Brown of Pullman; his brother, Steve Byers of Meridian, Idaho; and all of their families. His ex-wife, Sandi Byers, was a dear friend and remained an important part of Rick's life.
Rick grew up in a close-knit family in Pullman, where he excelled in track and football. After high school he attended Washington State University. An avid sports fan, Rick loved the Cougars and later went on to coach high school track for the Pullman Greyhounds.
He was a wonderful son and was very devoted to his parents, Wayne and Virgie Byers, until their deaths in 1985. Rick worked for his father at a local lumber yard company, Standard Lumber, which he later purchased and managed for several years.
In 1996, Rick and his family moved to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he continued to work in the lumber and construction industries.
Rick was known for his generous spirit and kind heart, as well as his sense of humor. He opened his home and believed in giving freely of his time and money to others in need. His compassion and thoughtfulness helped many people, which earned him long-lasting friendships. Rick had an easy-going nature, was fun-loving and creative. Singing karaoke was his favorite pastime. He was known around town for his beautiful voice, especially his renditions of Elvis Presley songs.
Rick's greatest joy came from being a father to his three children, Dustin, Tyler and his "angel" Brittany. He respected their individuality, nurtured their creative talents and always spoke with pride of their many accomplishments. Continue to reach for the stars and find happiness along the way. Your father's wonderful qualities will continue to live through each of you and through the lives of all he touched. Rest in peace, Rick, and know how much you are loved.
Graveside services will take place at the Pullman Cemetery; please join us for a celebration of life at 4 p.m. Dec. 11 at the pavilion at Banyan's on the Ridge, 1260 Palouse Ridge Drive, Pullman.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virgie Byers Memorial Scholarship, Pullman School District, 240 S.E. Dexter, Pullman, WA 99163. The scholarship will be renamed at a later date to "Byers Memorial Scholarship." Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman is caring for the family.
