John Wilson Mitchell was the Grandson of Dr. James Mitchell and Margaret Wilson Mitchell of Scotland. After the Revolutionary War Dr. and Mrs. Mitchell sailed for the United States with their two small sons, James Jr. and Thomas. Thomas became ill and died shipboard and was buried at sea. According to the Washington County Pa. Histories, Dr. James Mitchell practiced medicine in Beallsville and Scenery Hill, Washington County Pa.

James Mitchell Jr. married Margaret Wilson, daughter of Joseph and Margaret Wilson, Nov, 16 1809. The ceremony was performed by Judge Boyd Mercer. Sarah Wilson was born Nov. 5, 1792. They had eight children, John Mitchell Jr. the oldest.

John married Elizabeth Hunt (Born 20 Dec,1810 Died 21Feb1870). John taught a subscription school; for three months each winter and during the remainder of the year he did blacksmithing. He was a religious man. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell are both buried in the McVay Cemetery Pa.

They had eleven children.
