Robert Omar "Bob" Barbee, 85, of Lafayette, died at 6:24 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at St. Anthony Health Care.

He was born Aug. 17, 1925 in Roanoke, Illinois to the late John and Mary Cooley Barbee. He married Florence "Flo" Matula on Feb. 21, 1945 in New York City. She preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 2001. He was also preceded in death by 15 siblings.

Surviving are his children, John R. Barbee (wife: Barbara) of Incline Village, Nevada; Sheila A. Cochran (husband: Jim) of Lafayette and Richard A. Barbee (wife: Susan) of Austin, Texas; 4 grandchildren, Michael A. Barbee (wife: Amy) and Jeffrey Barbee, both of Lafayette, Derrick Barbee (wife: Debbie) of San Antonio and Kirsten Orand (husband: Austin) of Austin and 2 great-grandchildren, Finn Barbee and Cooper Barbee.

He served with the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. While serving he was honored with the Pacific War Zone Medal, Mediterranean-Middle East War Zone Medal, Merchant Marine Combat Bar, Victory Medal, Honorable Service Button and the Presidential Testimonial Letter. He also served in every theater in World War II.
