In North Carolina, Elias Stine married twice, but the marriage records are no longer extant. Family researchers speculate that his first wife was Sarah Fulbright; she died about 1822. Afterwards, he married Mary, whose surname may have been Daniels or Lantz. An older--perhaps eldest--child from this second marriage, Charles, was born 20 June 1828 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Elias Stine's family is said to have migrated in fall 1828 to Monroe County, Indiana.
Elias Stine entered land and farmed in Richland Township, Monroe County. His younger children with Mary were born there. After about 20 years in Indiana, Elias Stine's family moved to McLean County, Illinois, in 1848 or 1849.
