Abel was born in Braintree, Massachusetts and educated as a merchant. He and his elder brother, Thomas, carried on extensive enterprises in Boston and Portland, Maine from 1805 through 1816 during which time he married Susan Cox of Portland, Maine.

The brothers sold their investments in these cities and moved to Philadelphia in 1817. There they opened an import, export and dry good business on Market Street. They did business at this location for the next 15 years. In 1832, they ventured on to Marietta, Ohio. Susan died there in 1854. After Susan's death, Abel moved with his son, John Cox Vinton, to Wayne, Henry County, Iowa, in 1855.
