During 1840 he practiced in Floyd county, Indiana, and in 1841 went to Lafayette, where he remained till the spring of 1844, when he located in Frankfort, at the time being the youngest physician in Clinton county. DR. WILLIAM P. DUNN
died Tuesday night at 12 o'clock, at his residence on West Clinton street. His health had been failing for a number of years and his death was the result of complicated troubles. The funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the family residence, by Reverends Otis Smith, of the Presbyterian church, and J. J. Purcell, of the St. Luke's Episcopal, and were largely attended. Drs. Knapp, Strange, McGuire, Sims, Palmer, and Brown acted as pall bearers. A large procession followed the remains to the I. O. O. F. cemetery where they were interred. Dr. Dunn was born Dec. 16, 1816, in Jefferson county, near Hanover, and he always regarded it as a great honor that his ushering into the world was coincident with Indiana's admission to the Union. His parental ancestor was Scotch-Irish extraction, a man of great ability and generous means, and was prominently identified in the early history of Indiana. He settled in Indiana in 1809, Kentucky being his native state, and served his adopted state both in its territorial days, and its early period of state-hood with marked distinction. For seven years, from 1822 to 1829, he was registrar of the land office and was a gallant officer in the Black Hawk war. When his son, the subject of sketch was twenty-three years old, he began the study of medicine, and took a full course of lectures at the Louisville, Kentucky, Medical college. Practicing for some time in the neighborhood of his nativity, he located at this place, in 1844, and was long associated with Dr. T. B. Cox, as a partner. His health failing, he retired from active practice in 1885, having served his chosen profession in this county for forty-one long years in successful practice. He served his country during its greatest trial as a surgeon of the 40th regiment, Indiana infantry, and in 1867 was appointed pension examiner under President Johnson. December 28, 1842 marks the date of his union with Miss Maria C. Jones, at Crawfordsville, who, with two children, Robert S. and Mrs. Lizzie Tensley, of Crawfordsville, live to mourn his death. As a physician and citizen, Dr. Dunn's name is written with honor on Clinton county's scroll of fame.
