Shirley Hutchings Beckstead - charming, and unassuming husband, father, and grandfather passed away March 29, 2008 after a three year battle with myelodysplastic syndrome.

He was born March 4, 1926, in South Jordan, Utah, the youngest of eleven children. His parents were Isaac N. Beckstead and Florence Elizabeth Hutchings. Shirl married his high school sweetheart, Shirley E. Blanchard. They have resided on Fern Drive in Midvale for 55 years. They were lovingly known as "The Shirleys" by their grandchildren. They were blessed with one daughter, Kristy, who brought joy and pride into their lives.

Shirl graduated from Jordan High School in 1944 where he was student body president and was the winner of the Jordan District vocal competition in 1943 & 1944. He received a certificate of completion in business from the Alexander Hamilton Institute in 1957. He was proud to serve his country as a member of Squadron B-4 of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Music was always an important part of his life. Shirl could play the piano by ear and sing a song to fit almost any circumstance or event - much to the delight of his daughter and grandkids. He was a soloist with Lucy Baugh's Intermountain Choir and was on a choir tour in Hawaii when the Korean War broke out. He sang bass with the International Barbershop Champion Evans Quartet and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, including the opening of the Seattle World's Fair. The Quartet performed in nine productions of The Music Man with a Hollywood cast at the University of Utah. Shirl was a longtime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the SPEBSQSA, and the Amassador Club. Shirl was employed for over 40 years in the plumbing, heating, and mechanical contracting business as a salesman, factory representative, branch manager, and partner. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Midvale, Utah; their daughter, Kris and her husband, Jeff Page of Peoria, Arizona; granddaughter, Lindsay (Keith) Bradburn of Concord, California; grandsons, Nathan (Sarah) Page of St. Louis, Missouri, Coby (Natalie) Page of Peoria, Arizona, Brandt (Jordan) Page of South Salt Lake; as well as six greatgrandchildren; he is also survived by two sisters, Ruby Crellin of Sandy, Utah, and Daisy Peterson of Newport, Washington; and many nieces and nephews. We wish a special thank you to Dr. Harker, Dr. Beck, Esther Kannapel, and the entire staff at Utah Cancer Specialists for their thoughtfulness and kindness. We express gratitude to our family for their support and love, and offer appreciation for the concern and help of many neighbors and friends. Funeral services will be held at Goff Mortuary 8090 So. State on Wednesday, April 2, at 1:00 p.m. A viewing will take place Tuesday, April 1, from 6-8 p.m. and again Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Interment will be in the South Jordan City Cemetery.
