Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He attended Dickinson College and prior to the Civil War practiced law. Fought in the Mexican War and followed that service as Adjutant General of Pennsylvania from 1848 to 1852. During the Civil War he served first as Colonel and commander of the 7th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (a three-month enlistment unit), then as Colonel and commander of the 49th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “gallant conduct in the battle of Antietam, Md.” In his postwar career he engaged in mining and railroad pursuits.
