Alva Ayers Passed Away Here Thursday
Alva James Ayers, a resident of Chouteau county and Fort Benton for the past nearly forty years, passed away at the St. Clare hospital in this city at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6th. He had been in poor health for the past several months and had prior to his last hospitalization been a treatment there for treatment.
Mr. Ayers was widely known throughout this county, and was held in highest esteem by all. His passing will be mourned by a large circle of friends.
Alva James Ayers was born Sept. 18th, 1886, at Minneapolis, Kansas, where he spent his early life. He was united in marriage to Florence Eva Allison at Minneapolis, Kansas, on July 17, 1912. They came to Montana and this county in 1917 and he purchased land in the Highwood section and farmed it for 15 years. He moved to the Ridge section, east of town, in 1932 and farmed there until moving to Fort Benton to make their home in 1936. Upon moving here he took over the job as mail carrier on the Clear Lake route east of Fort Benton, and he continued that until his retirement a few years ago. During that time he was also employed at various part time jobs and worked for some time for Power Motors.
Mr. Ayers was of a cheerful disposition and liked to meet new people. He became friends with all of whom he came in contact.
Mr. Ayers is survived by his wife; two sons, Alva, Jr. and Leonard C. Ayers, of Fort Benton; and six grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters, John, of Fort Benton, and Ward, of Waldport, Ore.; Mrs. Bertha Montague and Mrs. Jessie Kibbler, both of Minneapolis, Kansas, and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held from the Benton Funeral Home chapel on Monday afternoon at two, conducted by Rev. W. Lloyd Hanley, pastor of the First Christian Church. Burial was in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery.
