Mrs. Tempie M. Talbott died Monday night at 9:30 o'clock at the home of her son, Wm. Talbott, in this city after an illness lasting about three days. Gathered at her bedside were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and other dear friends and relatives. Grandma Talbott was born in McNary Co. Tenn, Dec 2, 1820, her maiden name being Tempie M. Hodges. She married A. G. Talbott, Sr. Sept 17, 1840, and in 1846 they moved to Franklin (then Titus) County settling three miles east of Mt. Vernon, where they spent the remainder of their lives and reared a family of children who are now living examples of their parents' upright lives, being as follows: Romolus, William, Sarah (now Mrs. J. T. Douglass), Reuben D., Mrs. Mary T. Roberts, John R. (deceased) and Mrs. Hester Miller. From early girlhood she was a devoted member of the Missionary Baptist Church and was the last living one who composed the eight members at the organization of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in 1819.
She was also present at the organization of the Rehoboth Baptist Association and was the last living member except one. Since the death of her husband on Jan. 22, 1878, she has made her home with her sons in or near Mt. Vernon and has always been remarkably stout and active. Funeral services were held Tuesday aftenoon at the Baptist Church being conducted by Rev. T. B. Harrell, Pastor of the Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. T. M. Kirk, Pastor of the M. E. Church. The burial took place directly afterwards at the City Cemetery.
