Son of Clarkson and Ellen Smith; born October 26, 1900, Charleston, W. Va.
Moved to Wayne County, Ind. in 1914. Coremaker. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army December 30, 1916, Columbus Barracks, Ohio.
Sent to Ft. Screvens, Ga.; assigned to Replacement Draft, Coast Artillery Corps, Unit No. 1.

Embarked September 25, 1918.

Drowned when the Otranto was hit by another ship two miles off the Scottish Coast.

Buried in Kilchoman Cemetery, Kilehoman, Islay, Argyll, Scotland.



He was later re-interred in his home town.

(The cemetery lists death as 11/6/1918 but the ship sank 10/6.)
