MARGARET L. HELLER
January 16, 1920 - July 12, 2011

Margaret Lorraine Heller went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 12, 2011. She was born on January 16, 1920 in Vancouver, Washington to Harry and Mabel Heller.

She was a dedicated and highly respected educator in Vancouver, Washington for most of her life. Margaret's educational career lasted 40 years, including nine years as the only woman principal in the Vancouver School District. She began her career in Vancouver in 1942 at Washington School, where she taught for eleven years. Margaret worked as a primary school consultant, a teacher working with other teachers, then was promoted to principal in 1956. She spent five years at Hazel Dell Elementary, nine years at Harney, five years at Eisenhower school and five years at Sarah J. Anderson Elementary.

Margaret graduated from Vancouver High School in Vancouver, Washington in 1937, attended Oregon Normal School at Monmouth (later Oregon College of Education), and Western Washington College in Washington where she earned a bachelor degree. She later received her Masters of Education from the University of Oregon.

She also taught Sunday school at the First Christian Church in downtown Vancouver, Washington where she was an ordained Elder, trustee, and past president of the women's fellowship. Her devotion to God and her church was an important part of her life.

Margaret was very active in many local clubs including Daughters of the Pioneers, where she served as a president; Athenaeum, a women's study group, Delta Kappa Gamma (Teachers Honorary Society), and the Business and Professional Women's group.

Margaret is survived by her brother Ralph Heller of Cleveland, Ohio; Connie Heller (sister in law) Vancouver, Washington; nephews and nieces Gary Heller (Cicely) of Vancouver, Washington, Lary Heller (Martiel) Redmond, Washington, Bill Heller, Peggy Amos (James), Dan Heller (Mary), Steve Heller, Leonard Heller (Colleen) and many great nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her brother Frank of Vancouver, Washington, Dorothy Heller (sister in law) and nephews Rick and Daryl Heller.

A celebration of life was held at the First Christian Church, 19th and Main Street, Vancouver, Washington in the fellowship center on Saturday July 23, 2011. She was buried at Park Hill Cemetery in a private burial service on Monday, July 18, 2011 in Vancouver, Washington.

The family would like to thank all the many friends and church members that stayed by Margaret's side during her final days. Also to the wonderful and caring staff at Glenwood Place where she resided the past two years.

Margaret requested any donations be made to Special Olympics or the First Christian Church in Vancouver, Washington.
