Sophia Sloan Harris followed her husband Henry Harris to California after Henry and his business partner Jonathan H. Guild made a decent fortune providing miners with mercantile and beef.
After a brief stay in San Francisco, Sophia and Henry moved to Santa Cruz and bought the Franklin House Hotel on Main Street (now known as Front Street). Henry was a respected mason, (his monument is a replica of a stone mason's tool),but died from a fall off his hotel in 1868. Sophia was undeterred and continued to run a successful hotel until the fire of 1877. She rebuilt only to suffer loss again by fire. She left a large family behind, some of whom are also buried at Evergreen.
