Pliny was born July 14, 1833, in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, son of a father born in Massachusetts and a mother born in Connecticut. He died March 29, 1922, at Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, aged 88 years, 8 months and 15 days, and was buried there in the Auburn Cemetery. The Ellis Family plot contains an "Ellis" headstone and three gravestones. His military style gravestone there is inscribed "Pliny Ellis Co. A 7 Wis. Inf." and his family stone as "Father Pliny 1833 - 1922." The gravestone of his wife is inscribed "Mother Emma."

On March 22, 1868, Pliny was united in marriage to Emma Jane Chase, by Edgar Fuller, J.P., at Elk Mound, Dunn County, Wisconsin. Emma was born in 1847, in Ohio, daughter of a father born in New York and a mother born in Pennsylvania. Her date and place of death and burial are unknown, but she probably predeceased her husband, as she never filed for a Widow's pension. Phiny was a Civil War veteran who enlisted July 10, 1861 in at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to serve three years as a Private in Company A of the 7th Wisconsin Infantry. At that time he was listed as a 30 year old, 5'8" tall hewer with light hair, gray eyes and a florid complexion, born Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

On August 28, 1862, Pliny was wounded in both legs while Company A was engaged in battle at Gainsville, Virginia. His most serious wound was in the left leg below the knee. At the time he was wounded he was also suffering from chronic diarrhea. He was recovering from his wounds, but the diarrhea became chronic.

On December 11, 1862, Phiny was given a Disability Discharge at Emory Hospital when it was determined that he was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of chronic diarrhea of five months standing attended with emaciation, debility, and a loss of recuperative powers. His disability was considered total.

Pliny returned to his home at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, after his discharge, where he recovered his health in the following twelve months. On December 19, 1863, he enlisted at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to serve three years as a Private and veteran volunteer in the same company and regiment from which he received a disability discharge. On February 19, 1863, he was mustered into Federal service with Company A at Madison, Wisconsin. At that time he received $60.00 of his $300.00 enlistment bounty and was listed as a 31 year old, 5'8" tall hewer with light hair, gray eyes and a florid complexion, born in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. His enlistment was credited to the Chippewa County in the 6th Congressional District of Wisconsin.

On the muster roll of March/April, 1863, it was noted that Pliny had received $13.00 advance pay. On August 24, 1864, he was shot in the left hand while on picket duty at the Weldon Railroad, by a Minnie ball which carried away the second finger of the hand. On the muster roll of July/August, 1864, it was noted that he was absent wounded since August 23, 1864., and carried in that capacity through the muster roll of Jan./Feb., 1865. On the muster roll of March/April, 1865, it was noted that he had rejoined the company since making up the rolls. On May 1, 1865, he was promoted to Corporal.

On July 3, 1865, he was mustered out of Federal service with Company A near Jeffersonville, Indiana. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was due $240.00 of his enlistment bounty.

Pliny returned to his home in Eagle Point, Auburn Township, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, after his discharge. On an unknown date he moved to Wheeler, Dunn County, Wisconsin. His last move was to Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, where he lived out the rest of his days.

On July 15, 1876, Pliny Ellis filed Application No. 222,471 for an Invalid Veteran's Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 150,153.
