Eugene Gauss was the eldest son of Carl Friedrich Gauss, the German mathematician and his second wife, Minna Waldeck. He emigrated to the United States in 1832, served as a clerk, then joined the Army, serving in S. Dakota. He settled in St. Charles where he variously farmed, ran a lumber yard and was president of a local bank. He married Henrietta Fawcett. Later he moved to Boone county with his wife and two single children where he died.
