Son of Desiderio Castro & Bernice (Romero) Castro.

Some family members have said that he is one of at least three sets of twins and that his twin brother would be Fidel. He also looks like an identical twin to Fidel when he was young. However, the birthdates of the boys are different. Some of Fidel's family said that Fidel's twin died at birth.

Jose Eleive was born hearing impaired. It is known that two other children, Fidel and Benerito, were also born with a hearing impairment.

Eleive excelled in sports with his brother Fidel. Later in life he was kicked by a horse which caused irreversible brain damage and abnormal behavior. He never married and was eventually placed in a Nursing Home where he died.
