CHATFIELD -- The funeral for Ruth Smalley, 89, of Chatfield, will be 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chatfield, with the Rev. Preston Paul officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Smalley died Monday (Sept. 30, 2002) at Chosen Valley Care Center where she resided the last three years.

Ruth Hoffman was born March 16, 1913, in rural Chatfield. She graduated from Chatfield High School in 1930. She attended teachers normal training for one year in Chatfield. She taught in rural schools for 12 years. She lived in rural Chatfield until moving into Chatfield in 1994. She married Lyle Smalley on Dec. 24, 1943, in Chatfield. He died in 1994. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.

Survivors include one son, Charles (Denise) of Hampshire, Ill.; one daughter, Natalie Chatham of Lompoc, Calif.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen (Kenneth) Pattridge of Stewartville. She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield one hour before the service at the church.
