After his marriage to Marie on 16 Nov 1847 in Washington Co. IL. he stayed at the latter place, where he devoted some five years to farming. In 1852 he came back to Highland, and till 1860 conducted a jewelry store and watchmaker shop in the present tonsorial establishment of Louis Ernst. Tired of this, he again took to farm life in Washington Co., returning to Highland in 1865 and resuming his former business of jeweler and watchmaker, at the same time devoting a great deal of his time to the study of law, following the latter profession successfully till his end. He proved to be a faithful, reliable and conscientious legal adviser, adjuster of court and probate matters, and thousands of people of Highland and vicinity sought his counsel and reaped the benefit.
